Completion of Tuberculosis Screening Exercise at Heartbeat@Bedok
19 May 2026
The Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) has concluded the tuberculosis (TB) screening exercise for tenants, workers, and those who frequent Heartbeat@Bedok, Block 216 Bedok Food Centre & Market, and Singapore Pools Bedok Betting Centre.
One person has been diagnosed with active TB disease so far. He has commenced treatment and is doing well, and will be non-infectious upon completion of two weeks of treatment. Contact tracing is underway to identify and evaluate the close contacts.
3,525 persons have been screened for TB since 2 May 2026. Amongst these, 85.6 percent (3,016 persons) have tested negative for TB and do not require follow-up action. The remaining 14.4 percent (509 persons) tested positive on their blood test, and required a follow-up chest X-ray to determine if they have active TB or latent TB infection (LTBI).
To date, 447 individuals have completed their chest X-ray. Amongst this group, one person has been diagnosed with active TB. Another 42 persons will undergo further evaluation at the National Tuberculosis Care Centre. This is a precautionary measure. They may not have active TB disease but have minor abnormalities on their chest X-ray. They will undergo a thorough clinical assessment. The remaining 404 persons have normal chest X-rays, and may have previous infections or LTBI.
Both the active TB disease and latent TB infection rates detected from the screening at Bedok are within expectations. TB is endemic in Singapore. In 2024, there were 1,156 new cases of active TB disease among Singapore residents, at an incidence rate of 27.6 cases per 100,000 residents. LTBI is not uncommon in our population, with rates of up to 30% in the older age groups.
Based on the results so far, CDA has concluded the screening exercise at Bedok. We will follow up with the remaining individuals at SATA CommHealth Bedok Clinic1 or the National Tuberculosis Screening Centre2. Screening, as well as further tests, continue to be offered free of charge until 5 June 2026.
CDA would like to express our appreciation to all who came forward for screening. With everyone playing their part, we can ensure that persons diagnosed with TB are treated effectively and reduce community transmission of TB in Singapore.
