Singapore contributes US$2 million to support the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease outbreak response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda

Singapore will contribute US$2 million to support the ongoing Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) outbreak response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The contribution will be made through the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), in support of the joint Continental Preparedness and Response Plan launched on 5 June 2026.
The BVD outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the WHO on 17 May 2026 and a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security by Africa CDC on 18 May 2026. According to the WHO, the BVD outbreak in the DRC is evolving rapidly, with sustained transmission and a rising number of reported cases.
Singapore's contribution will support efforts in laboratory testing and contact tracing, infection prevention and control, and case management on the ground. It will be channelled towards the procurement of vital supplies under the Continental Preparedness and Response Plan, including:
Diagnostic and laboratory equipment to scale up testing and contact tracing;
Personal protective equipment and infection prevention and control supplies for frontline healthcare workers; and
Essential medicines, fluids, blood products, oxygen, and critical care equipment for treatment units and hospitals.
Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Health and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies said, "Global health security is a shared responsibility, and Singapore has always believed in being a reliable partner in times of need. The BVD outbreak in the DRC and Uganda is a rapidly evolving situation that demands a swift and coordinated international response. We have prioritised our contribution to getting the right supplies to the right places quickly, and supporting the healthcare workers on the frontlines."
The contribution is part of Singapore’s broader, sustained commitment to global public health, and builds on our established partnership with Africa CDC and the WHO. In May 2026, Mr Ong announced at the 79th World Health Assembly that Singapore would contribute US$12 million to the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations over four years. In 2024, Singapore contributed S$24 million to the WHO's inaugural round of investment into improving protection from health emergencies. In the same year, Singapore provided mpox diagnostic kits and testing supplies, enabling up to 50,000 tests to support Africa CDC's mpox response.
